Violence is not a manifestation of specifically Irish conditions. It’s a symptom of the splintering of authority, the failure of any one voice to predominate and become accepted. It’s about the dispossessed, the disenfranchised, the poor, the chronically unemployed, the hopeless, all victims of foul conditions.
That’s what the play is about, and Drake didn’t get it.

Friel’s play is based on the Jan. 30, 1972, Bloody Sunday Massacre in Derry, but it is set on Feb. 10, 1970.
