The World : Cyprus President Defeated
Greek Cypriot President Spyros Kyprianou lost his bid for reelection, returns in Nicosia showed early today, leaving a conservative and a Communist-backed millionaire headed for a runoff. Final results from the balloting put conservative Glafcos Clerides on top with 33.3%, followed by businessman George Vassiliou with 30.1% and Kyprianou with 27.3%. The results made a Feb. 21 runoff between Clerides and Vassiliou certain, since neither polled more than half of the vote as required by the constitution. The leader of the small Socialist Party, Vassos Lyssarides, polled 9.2%. Kyprianou, who was trying for a third five-year term, conceded defeat.
