NEW YORK — Two hundred guards swinging clubs and lobbing tear gas stormed a city jail early today, crushing a riot by 550 inmates who ransacked cellblocks in a three-hour insurrection to protest conditions.

Koehler said inmates complained about what they said were frequent and rough searches by jail guards.
