Controllers’ Strike Shuts Athens Airport

ATHENS — The Greek capital’s airport was shut down Thursday in a 24-hour strike by air traffic controllers and other workers seeking bonuses for dangerous or stress-filled jobs.

A labor union spokesman said more than 70,000 workers have joined the walkout, including airport, railroad and harbor workers and state hospital and veterinary employees.

Olympic Airways, the Greek state carrier, is scheduling extra flights for today and international flights are to resume “early in the morning,” a spokesman said.

“We want extra money for stressful and dangerous jobs to be built into our pay scales, and also the right to get an earlier pension,” said an airport union spokesman.
