STANDISH, Me. — The largest hot-air balloon ever built lifted off at sunrise today from frozen Sebago Lake on its first, brief flight.
The Super Maine, 10% to 20% larger in volume than the Virgin Atlantic Flyer, the largest hot-air balloon on record, rose 50 feet off the ground just before 6:30 a.m. with 25 crew members aboard. It stayed in the air, tethered to ropes, for several minutes. Organizers said their only goal was to build a balloon that was larger in volume than the Atlantic Flyer.
