Capistrano Valley High School got its 16th straight boys’ basketball victory Friday by beating Palm Springs, 90-61, with a big first half in the opening round of the Southern Section 4-A division playoffs in front of 1,500 at Saddleback College.
Guard Charles Lockard led the Cougars to a 24-9 lead in the first quarter with 11 points and 4 steals and the rout was on. Lockard finished with 15 points.
Todd Marinovich led all scorers with 23 points, including 11 in the second quarter when he made three three-point shots.
Capistrano Valley (23-4) held a 48-23 halftime lead as Marinovich made five three-point baskets.
The Cougars, the top-ranked team in Orange County by area sports writers, also received double-figure scoring from sophomore forward Scott McCorkle (13 points), 7-foot center Jim Waikle (11) and reserve center Steve McCaughey (10).
Palm Springs, which finished the season 17-8, was led by senior guard Sean Witt with 16 points. The Indians were playing without their top scorer and rebounder, Richard Low, who was declared academically ineligible last week.
