Ireland’s Sligo District Court ordered the extradition of a prominent Irish Republican Army activist wanted on a weapons charge in Northern Ireland. Owen Carron, 34, a former member of the British Parliament and a leading member of Sinn Fein, the IRA’s legal political wing, had been sought since he jumped bail in British-ruled Northern Ireland two years ago. Carron was the election officer for Bobby Sands, who launched a seven-month hunger strike at Belfast’s Maze prison in 1981. Sands, who was elected to the British Parliament while behind bars, starved to death during the protest. When Sands died, Carron won his parliamentary seat.
