Several top leaders of Solidarity have been detained in Poland in an effort to forestall a meeting of the banned labor union’s National Executive Council, Solidarity founder Lech Walesa said. The reported wave of arrests was the largest police action against union leaders since a government amnesty in 1985 that released 225 political prisoners. An angry Walesa identified the detainees as Janusz Onyszkiewicz and Bogdan Lis, who, he said, “were picked up by police from my car in front of my house,” as well as Wladyslaw Frasyniuk, Stefan Jurczak, Stanislaw Weglarz, Antoni Tokarczuk and, reportedly, Solidarity adviser Jacek Kuron. Former union leader Zbigniew Bujak was also seized.
