A Canadian cold front pushed into the north-central states, reducing visibility to near zero in many areas of northern Michigan and producing near-blizzard conditions along the Lake Superior shoreline. Snow extended from the lower Great Lakes region across Ohio, northern Indiana, northern Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan, and from western North Dakota to north-central Kansas. Up to 4 inches of snow blanketed the Chicago area overnight, and those venturing to drive on the snow- and ice-packed roads found it rough going. “People are slipping and sliding all over the place,” a Chicago patrol officer said after his squad car was struck head-on by a sliding auto. Snow also lingered over northern New England, with Williamstown, Vt., picking up 7 inches overnight, while rain fell over many other parts of the East.
