A painting by modern Dutch artist Piet Mondrian has been found in the Amsterdam office of an unidentified American businessman, Sotheby’s Amsterdam office announced Tuesday. The 1905 impressionistic oil painting of a tree, ships and a barn is signed by Mondrian, who became famous for his later abstract paintings, according to Sotheby’s Amsterdam director Auke van der Werff, who added the painting was likely to fetch between $30,000 and $40,000, far less than the painter’s abstract works, which have sold for as high as $5 million.
