Local News in Brief : Picus Aide Enters Plea of Not Guilty in Theft

An aide to Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joy Picus pleaded not guilty Tuesday to stealing more than $3,000 from an elderly constituent.
Jack Newman, 76, had sought the help of the aide, Carlotta Z. Olguin, in making a donation to the National Organization for Women in memory of his deceased wife, authorities said.
Olguin, 39, entered her plea to one count of felony grand theft in Los Angeles Municipal Court. Olguin, an eight-year employee whose job entailed working with senior-citizen groups, is charged with taking $3,134.94 from Newman.
Olguin, who is free on $2,000 bail, is scheduled to appear March 22 for a preliminary hearing. She has been placed on unpaid leave from Picus’ office.
