College Highlights : Northridge Drops to 2-12 as Bethel Throws 3-Hitter

Chad Bethel pitched a complete game as Westmont defeated Cal State Northridge, 4-2, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at Northridge.
Bethel, a junior right-hander, surrendered 3 hits, struck out 5 and walked 2 as Westmont improved to 6-7.
Northridge (2-12) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Jimmy Mitchell’s first home run of the season. The Matadors increased their advantage to 2-0 in the sixth.
Westmont’s Dan Angulo, who was 2 for 3 with 2 runs batted in, hit a solo home run off Northridge starter Mike Rooney in the seventh to make the score 2-1.
Northridge reliever Robert Wheatcroft walked David Heldoorn to lead off the eighth inning and Kent Madsen followed with a double down the left-field line to tie the score.
Madsen moved to third on a sacrifice and one out later Wheatcroft struck out Jack Schniepp, but the ball got away from catcher Chae-Ho Chong, allowing Madsen to score and Schniepp to reach first. Schniepp stole second and scored on a single by Angulo for Westmont’s final run.
WOMENS’ TENNIS
CS Northridge 5, CS Los Angeles 4--Strong performances in the doubles competition helped CSUN slip by in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at CSLA.
The Lady Matadors’ No. 1 doubles team of Missy Conn and Allison Kincaid beat the CSLA team of Edna Olivarez and Jennifer Choi, 2-6, 6-0, 6-0. Teammates Nicole Gillis and Kris Anderson defeated Lisa Mirakami and Linda Marmolejo in CSUN’s other doubles win.
Northridge (3-2, 3-1 in conference play) swept the singles matches. Conn defeated CSLA’s Traci Binder, 6-4, 6-4, Kaliko Yandall beat Candice Wong, 6-2, 6-4., and Anderson defeated Geraldine Tendora, 7-6, 7-5.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Valley 54, Pierce 50--Dave Hale anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team in the last event to help Valley to the nonconference victory at Pierce.
Hale also led the way in two other events, winning the 50-yard freestyle race in 22.7 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 49.8.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Valley 66, Pierce 65--Shawna Sacks led the Lady Monarchs with a double win. Sacks won the 100 freestyle in 59.6 and the 500 freestyle in 5:37.2.
For Pierce, Stephanie Hoisch won three events, including the 200 freestyle (2:04.4), the 100 butterfly (1:01.5) and the 50 butterfly (27.8).
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Pierce d. Orange Coast, 15-11, 15-11, 15-10--Matt Bellers had 26 kills and Rico Guimaraes added 9 for Pierce (4-0, 3-0 in conference play) in a South Coast Conference match at Orange Coast.
