In the other Division IV boys’ game:
Mt. Empire 70, Coronado 69-- Senior point guard John Lelevier made four free throws for a four-point lead, and host Mt. Empire ran out the clock after Jay Malott’s three-pointer pulled Coronado within one with seven seconds left.
No. 2-seeded Mt. Empire will be making its first appearance in a section basketball championship Saturday. The school had only been in the playoffs once before, losing in 1976 to Army-Navy.
Malott scored 36 points for Coronado (7-16), which surrendered several fast-break layups in Mt. Empire’s 27-point third quarter. Lelevier scored 24 points and teammate Tim Johnson 20.
GIRLS
Coronado 43, Marian 30-- Visiting Marian (6-12) had its worst quarter of the year after leading 19-17 at the half, scoring just one point and taking only three field shots. Coronado (11-12) capitalized to lead by six after three quarters.
Coronado will play Holtville in the final Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Sports Arena.
