Defeat of Plan to Widen Road

Regarding “Canyon Saved,” Feb. 25: Those who journeyed by bus from Laguna Beach to Marina del Rey to protest improvement of Laguna Canyon Road before the California Coastal Commission were not honest with themselves or their fellow citizens. Why? Because they chose to travel on Interstate 405 rather than on the unimproved California 1. They were glad to use modern roads as long as they were not built near Laguna. They were happy to use divided highways but unwilling to provide the same to us motorists who use Laguna Canyon Road from time to time and find it unsafe, slow and not very attractive.

It is sad to realize that less than a bus full of protesters could undermine progress and safety.

How those people find beauty between El Toro Road and Pacific Coast Highway with the many run-down and substandard buildings along the route is hard to understand.

There have been 30 deaths along the road in the past 10 years. The protesters who rode the bus and the commissioners who voted to reject the widening plan must share in no small way the responsibility for each death yet to come.

Again, because of apathy, the tail has wagged the dog.
