Golf Roundup : Bobby Wadkins Retains His 2-Stroke Lead Over Chip Beck

Bobby Wadkins, seeking his first PGA Tour victory in a 14-year career, retained a two-stroke lead Saturday in the third round of the $1-million Doral Open golf tournament at Miami.

Wadkins, the leader all the way in the chase for a $180,000 first prize, had a third-round 70 and finished 54 holes over the Blue Monster course at the Doral Country Club in 12-under-par 204.

Chip Beck, who scored his first career victory last week in the Los Angeles Open, held on to second with a 70 that left him at 206.

Mark McCumber was at 207 after a 68, while Jack Nicklaus remained in contention with a 71 that left him in a five-way tie at 208 with Sandy Lyle, Ray Floyd, Bruce Lietzke and Ben Crenshaw.

Beth Daniel eagled the 18th hole to take a three-stroke lead in the third round of the $300,000 Women’s Kemper Open at Princeville, Hawaii.

The eagle gave Daniel a round of two-under-par 70 and a 54-hole score of 208 on the Mirage Princeville Ocean and Lakes course on the island of Kauai.

Daniel started the third round one stroke ahead of Marci Bozarth, who shot a 72 to finish in a four-way tie for second at 211 with Betsy King, Ayako Okamoto and Amy Alcott.

Australian Greg Norman, inspired by a hole-in-one at the par-3 eighth hole, took a 5-stroke lead after 3 rounds of the $200,000 Tournament Players’ Championship at Sydney, Australia.

Norman shot a four-under-par 68 for a 202 total. Sharing second place were Australian Graham Marsh and Swede Anders Forsbran.
