A solidarity rally in Fresno drew more than 400 protesters of Armenian descent. The rally was called to urge Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to reunite the ancient Armenian homeland. The Soviet region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is predominantly Armenian, was severed from the Armenian Republic in 1923 by Soviet leader Josef Stalin and given to the neighboring republic of Azerbaijan. Hundreds of thousands of Soviet Armenians have demonstrated in the capital city of Yerevan recently calling for reunification.
