TV, Film Writers Strike

United Press International

About 9,600 television and movie writers on both coasts went on strike today in a contract dispute that immediately disrupted production of late-night TV shows.

NBC’s “Late Night with David Letterman” was pulled out of production, and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” was expected to be taped with comedian Jay Leno standing in for Carson and apparently using his own material, an NBC spokeswoman said. By mid-week, only repeats of both shows will be aired, the network said.
