Newport Pharmaceuticals International, a Newport Beach health care company, reported a net loss of $2.4 million for the eight-month period ended Dec. 31. That compares to a net loss of $596,000 for the comparable eight-month period in 1986. Revenues totaled $18.1 million, compared to net revenues of $5.6 million for the comparable year-earlier period. The company acquired America’s Pharmacy, a mail service prescription drug operation, in April, 1987. The eight-month period reflects Newport’s change to a calendar year. The company said its 1987 loss reflects the expense of clinical trials to establish the efficacy of its drug, Isoprinosine, as a treatment for conditions leading to acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
