College Highlights : Cal Lutheran Stays Perfect in District Play

The Cal Lutheran baseball team won its third consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference game with a 9-7 victory Thursday at Cal Baptist.
Jeff Chalmers went 3 for 4 and Kevin Wynn was 1 for 3 with his fourth home run for the Kingsmen. Tom Bonds added a pair of hits for Cal Lutheran.
Wynn’s homer was a 2-run shot in the fourth inning, when CLU (9-7, 3-0 in conference play) took advantage of 3 hits and a hit batter to score 3 runs.
Reliever Chris Vanole (2-2) gave up 1 hit and 1 walk, but allowed no runs in two-thirds of an inning to pick up the win. Matt Shepherd got the last 2 outs in the ninth to pick up his first save.
In other baseball games:
Moorpark 13, Glendale 5--Jon DeGennero, who didn’t last past the first inning in his most recent start, pitched into the eighth inning and added 3 hits and 2 RBIs to help the Raiders in a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.
“He pitched pretty well today,” Moorpark Coach Ron Stillwell said. “He got the ball down better and he got ahead of the hitters.”
Lloyd Wood had 2 doubles and 3 RBIs for Moorpark (5-5, 1-2).
Valley 4, Mission 3--Sophomore pitcher Jose Banuelos allowed just 1 hit and no runs in 5 innings of work to lead Valley in a Southern California Conference game at home. Banuelos, who is primarily a reliever and leads the Monarchs with 3 saves this season, allowed 2 walks and struck out 8 in his first start of the season.
Banuelos (1-1) had a no-hitter going through 4 innings, but he gave up a single to Hans Hekking in the fifth.
For Valley (5-9, 2-0) sophomore Sean Thompson went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs and a stolen base.
Also for Valley, sophomore Johnny Quick was 2 for 4 with a double.
SOFTBALL
Cal Lutheran 6-6, Christ College 2-4--DeAndra Pilkington doubled and scored twice in the second game of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.
The Master’s 10-12, Pacific Christian 3-3--Michelle Vail pitched a 3-hitter in the first game and Beth Downey threw a 4-hitter in the second game as the Lady Mustangs swept a nonconference doubleheader at home.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Western Michigan d. Cal State Northridge, 6-3--The Matadors’ Suzy Izmirian defeated Stephanie Schultze, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, but none of her teammates could post a win during a first-round match in the UNLV tournament.
CSUN’s other 2 victories were by forfeit.
