China Pardons Its Taiwan ‘Adversaries’

BEIJING — China said Monday it has pardoned its former “adversaries” now in Taiwan of crimes committed before Communist armies swept to power on the Chinese mainland in 1949.
The official New China News Agency said state prosecutors and the Supreme People’s Court have agreed not to prosecute in a move to encourage Taiwanese to return to mainland China.
Taipei lifted a 38-year ban on travel to mainland China last November, and more than 10,000 mainlanders living on the Nationalist-ruled island have returned since then.
China has spared no effort to impress visiting Taiwanese, building special cut-rate hotels and in some cases offering limousine services from the airport.
