Chatsworth 9, El Camino Real 8--Art Lowe hit a 2-run home run in the fifth inning to lift Chatsworth in its West Valley League opener.
Lowe, who was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs, homered with Chatsworth trailing, 8-7. Eric Niece had 2 doubles and Rex McMackin tripled for Chatsworth (5-1).
Chatsworth had 12 hits and committed 6 errors. El Camino Real (0-1) had 10 hits and 2 errors.
Granada Hills 8, Kennedy 2--Senior right-hander Jeff Adams threw a complete-game 4-hitter as the Highlanders won their season and Mid-Valley League opener at Kennedy (3-3).
Granada Hills jumped on Kennedy left-hander Colin Hines (2-1) for 3 runs in the first and third innings and built a 7-0 lead before Kennedy shortstop Gino Tagliaferri blasted a 2-run homer in the sixth. Chris Murphy had 3 RBIs and Darryl Stephenson had 2 for the Highlanders. Tagliaferri had 2 of Kennedy’s 4 hits.
Cleveland 4, Canoga Park 1--Kirk Surabian opened Cleveland’s West Valley League season by pitching a 5-hitter against the defending City champion, spoiling Horace Consolo’s league coaching debut. Surabian, a senior right-hander, walked 4, struck out 4 and allowed no earned runs.
Mike Bergren, who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, knocked a 2-run triple in the first off Canoga Park’s Mike Roberts, who struck out 12 in 6 innings. Mario Valencia also had 2 hits for Cleveland (1-0).
Birmingham 5, Monroe 2--Chuck Fiore’s two-out, bases-loaded single in the seventh inning snapped a 2-2 tie in the Mid-Valley League opener at Monroe (3-3). Three runs scored on the play when the ball went by left fielder Joe Marquise and rolled to the fence.
San Fernando 6, Van Nuys 5--After scoring once in the bottom of the seventh of the Mid-Valley League opener, Van Nuys loaded the bases and nearly tied the game when San Fernando shortstop Albert Torres bobbled Fabian Saucedo’s ground ball before throwing him out to end the game.
