Poly High’s Greg Nealon outpitched Sylmar’s Olonzo Woodfin in a battle of All-City pitchers, leading Poly to a 1-0 victory Monday in an East Valley League game at Sylmar.
Nealon (2-0), who has allowed 1 earned run in 24 innings, scattered 6 hits, walked 2 and struck out 9 in his complete-game victory. The senior left-hander, whose earned-run average is 0.29, struck out the final 2 batters in the seventh inning after allowing a single and a double.
“The tougher the situation, the tougher he gets,” Poly Coach Jerry Cord said.
Woodfin, who is also a left-handed senior, allowed 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. He also had 2 singles.
Poly’s Ed Chavez doubled home Rodrigo Fuentes for the game’s only run in the fifth.
Poly (4-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the league, 1 game ahead of Sylmar (3-1) and North Hollywood (3-1).
