SAN DIEGO — - Jazz Unlimited bucks the big time this weekend. Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians begins a two-night stand at the Spreckels right before Jazz Unlimited’s Saturday and Sunday concert performances at SDSU’s Dramatic Arts Theater.
But with live jazz music by the popular Rob Mullins Trio, an award-winning sculpture by Steve Lombardi adding impetus to a major new dance work, and a revival of the company’s big crowd pleaser (“Company Break”), director Pat Rincon is confident of another success.
“I’m not worried,” Rincon said. “We had no other choice of dates for our concert, but we have a loyal following, and we feel they’ll be back. Anyway, our concerts are very different (from Dean’s).”
The San Diego-based jazz group will be the only game in town on Sunday night (Dean’s troupe dances its final performance on Saturday), but there’s no telling how the competition from big-league dance will affect the home team, despite Jazz Unlimited’s impressive sell-out record to date.
