Bolshoi’s Liepa Invited to Dance in UCI ‘Kid’

Negotiations have been initiated with Andris Liepa, a leading dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, to appear in the title role in Eugene Loring’s “Billy the Kid” at UC Irvine in October, according to Don Bradburn, artistic director of the UCI Dance Ensemble.
The Bolshoi dancer, who has recently appeared with the New York City Ballet, was last seen in Southern California in August during the Bolshoi’s first U.S. tour in eight years.
The invitation, pending approval of the Soviet government, will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Loring’s ballet, which was premiered in 1938 by Ballet Caravan in Chicago.
Loring was the founding chairman of the UCI dance department in 1965 and remained in that post until his death in 1980.
