Local News in Brief : Office Towers Under Way
- Share via
City and state officials Tuesday formally kicked off construction of what will be the largest state office building in California, a $180-million downtown complex to open in 1990.
The twin-tower building, to be named in honor of President Reagan, will accommodate 3,000 workers and is expected to give a boost to the city’s efforts to revitalize the deteriorating Spring Street area, once known as the Wall Street of the West.
The 850,000-square-foot complex will include 17- and 14-story towers, shops, a child care center for employees, a public cafeteria, a 272-seat auditorium and a sculpture garden.
The Community Redevelopment Agency spent $20 million to buy the three-acre site on Spring Street between 3rd and 4th streets.
