Local News in Brief : Burbank Officer Loses Part of His Hand as Bomb Explodes

Part of a Burbank police officer’s right hand was blown off Tuesday when he picked up a homemade bomb in a trailer park, authorities said.

Four residents of the trailer park in the 2200 block of North Hollywood Way were arrested in the incident, including a mother and her two teen-age children, Burbank police said.

Officer Gabriel Alvarez, 41, was listed in stable condition at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where surgeons tried to reattach some of his severed fingers.

Alvarez, who was not an explosives expert, was injured while investigating a report that a homemade bomb was on the property, police said. The device in question exploded when he picked it up about 2:30 p.m., police said.

The trailer park residents, who were arrested about 7 p.m., were being held at the Burbank Jail on suspicion of possessing an explosive device, police said.

Joseph William Snow, 46, was being held on $250,000 bail. The mother, Noah Carol Scott, 42, was being held on $60,000 bail, as was her son, John Patrick Scott, 19. Her daughter, Lisa Dawn Scott, 18, was being held on $5,000 bail.
