David Lindgren, the Department of Interior’s controversial regional solicitor who was investigated for unethical activities, has resigned. Jason Peltier, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Sacramento, confirmed that Lindgren’s last day on the job was Friday. Peltier said Lindgren felt that he could no longer look for a job in the private sector while continuing to work for the government. In January of 1987, Lindgren became the subject of an investigation after it was learned that he had been discussing job opportunities with a Sacramento law firm that represents the Westlands Water District, the nation’s largest federal irrigation district, which was then in negotiations with the Interior Department over a new long-term water delivery contract. Opponents of the contract, approved in December, 1986, said Lindgren played a key role in writing a contract favorable to Westlands, providing hundreds of millions of dollars of benefits in subsidized water.
