The Nation : Cold Wave Breaks Records Across South

An arctic cold wave settled over much of the eastern half of the nation, shattering temperature records and threatening peach crops across the South. The unseasonably cold air either tied or broke more than three dozen record low temperatures in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. More record cold was forecast for today and freeze warnings were issued in Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. Record lows included readings of 13 degrees in Calico Rock, Ark., 25 in Memphis, Tenn., 31 in San Antonio, Savannah, Ga., and Baton Rouge, La., 32 in Houston and 40 in New Orleans.
