Susan Butcher and her dog team took a two-hour lead in the closing push of the 1,158-mile Anchorage-to-Nome Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
Butcher, 33, winner of the last two Iditarods in record time, said her 11 huskies “know it’s close to the end of the race. I can feel the excitement building in the older dogs that have raced with me before.”
She is expected to cross the finish line sometime this morning. But the National Weather Service predicted strong winds and blowing snow could slow the pace.
