NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament : Wake Forest Rallies to Beat Villanova, 53-51

Jenny Mitchell’s layup with two seconds left capped a rally that gave Wake Forest a 53-51 victory over Villanova Wednesday night in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament at Villanova, Pa.
Wake Forest (23-7) tied the game on a jumper by Alice Neal with 47 seconds left and Neal fed Mitchell for the winning shot.
Lisa Angelotti scored 18 points for Villanova (20-9).
St. John’s 83, Fairfield 70--Sabrina Johnson scored 20 points and the Express downed the Lady Stags at New York.
Dolores Dixon added 15 points for St. John’s (22-9). Dana Pellegrino had 21 points for Fairfield (19-10).
South Carolina 77, Alabama 63--Karen Middleton scored 21 points as the Lady Gamecocks beat the Crimson Tide at Columbia, S.C.
The Lady Gamecocks (23-10) made 18 of 24 free throws in the final 3:27. Laura Vaughn had 22 points for Alabama (18-10).
St. Joseph’s 68, Bowling Green 66--Kim Foley scored 21 points and the Hawks rallied to beat the Falcons at Philadelphia.
Dale Hodges had 17 points and 13 rebounds for St. Joseph’s (24-7). Angie Bonner scored 18 for Bowling Green (24-6).
Other results: Stephen F. Austin routed LSU, 84-62; Kansas beat Middle Tennessee, 81-75; Penn State edged LaSalle, 86-85, and Colorado beat Eastern Illinois, 78-72.
