*** 1/2 “Ulzana’s Raid.” MCA. $59.95.
A callow young lieutenant and a seasoned, fatalistic scout pursue a band of escaped Apaches on a murder raid. Robert Aldrich’s 1971 western uses a situation reminiscent of “The Searchers,” salted by the disillusionment and fear of the Vietnam era. Between two extremists--the over-idealistic lieutenant and the embittered Ulzana--stand two swing characters, caught in the middle: Burt Lancaster as the scout and Jorge Luke as his enigmatic Indian tracker. Lancaster’s superb mellowness in “Atlantic City” was prefigured in movies like this one.
