Baseball : Trachel’s Shutout Leads Troy Past Sonora, 5-0

Steve Trachel threw a six-hit shutout as Troy High School opened defense of its Freeway League baseball championship with a 5-0 victory Friday over host Sonora.

Trachel (3-0), a senior right-hander, struck out six batters.

Troy (3-2, 1-0) took the lead on Tom Wilson’s two-run homer in the first inning. Bob Julian made it 5-0 with a three-run homer in the second.

Kevin Cook went 3 for 4 for Sonora (2-5, 0-1). Dave Streiter (1-1) took the loss.

In other Freeway League games:

La Habra 7, Sunny Hills 5--La Habra’s Jeff Shaw doubled in a run in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie at Sunny Hills. The Highlanders (5-2, 1-0) added an insurance run in the seventh when Kevin Caps was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Matt Lipscomb (2-1) went the distance, striking out 10. Jason Sugarman went 2-4 with an RBI for Sunny Hills (4-6, 0-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 7, Laguna Beach 2--Brian Smith (3-0) had seven strikeouts in a complete-game victory for visiting Orange (3-4, 1-0). Skip Tanner went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, including the game-winning single in the fourth.

Trabuco Hills 7, Laguna Hills 3--John Shetland went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs to lead host Trabuco Hills (2-2, 1-0). John Barnes also drove in two runs for the Mustangs. David Lowery went the distance, striking out five. Craig Scheff went 2 for 4 for Laguna Hills (0-1 in league).

In the Sea View League:

Saddleback 8, University 7--The Roadrunners built an 8-4 lead after four innings, then hung on for the victory at home. George Saldanan hit a two-run homer and Sean Therien pitched four innings for the victory and drove in two runs for Saddleback (5-2, 1-0). Scott McCorgary went 2 for 3, including a home run, with 2 RBIs for University (5-2, 0-1). Mark Sutter had four hits for the Trojans.

Estancia 12, Newport Harbor 1--Conrad Colby pitched five innings, allowing just one hit, for the victory. Colby also went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs for host Estancia (5-2, 1-0). Newport Harbor is 1-6 overall and 0-1 in league.

Tustin 3, Corona del Mar 0--Monte Jones threw a three-hitter to lead the host Tillers (5-2, 1-0). Jones (3-1) struck out nine. Ralph Grajeda provided the offense with a three-run homer in the second inning. Corona del Mar is 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league.

In the South Coast League:

El Toro 4, Mission Viejo 1--Don Goodard threw a 4-hitter, striking out 7, for host El Toro (4-4, 1-0). Forest Hayes drove in two runs and Tim Jurkowski had three hits for El Toro. Jeff Metz singled home Mission Viejo’s run. Mission Viejo is 5-1 overall and 0-1 in league.

Dana Hills 16, San Clemente 3--Chris Delfs went 3 for 3 with a two-run home run in the first inning, Nick Jimas went 3 for 3 and Lance Marks hit a grand slam in the sixth inning for host Dana Hills (6-2, 1-0). Mike Kisslig (3-0) got the win for Dana Hills.

Irvine 10, Capistrano Valley 8--Mike Nau went 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs for host Irvine (5-2, 1-0). Terry Rahmatulla drove in three runs for Irvine. John Bretza pitched five innings, striking out five for the victory. Brian Walker had two hits and two RBIs for Capistrano Valley (0-1 in league).

In the Sunset League:

Ocean View 7, Fountain Valley 6--The host Seahawks scored six runs in the first inning, then hung on for the victory. D.J. Andrews and Todd Bailey drove in two runs each for Ocean View (5-3, 1-0). Dan Naulty (4-0) went the distance, allowing just two earned runs. Bob Mendoza had two hits and two RBIs for Fountain Valley (0-1 in league).

Edison 8, Marina 3--Bill Bertucci went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI for host Edison (4-1-1). Frank Vidales (2-1) went the distance, striking out six.

In the Academy League:

Liberty Christian 14, Cal Lutheran 4--Mark Baltodano went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs for Liberty Christian (4-2, 1-0) at TeWinkle Park. Bryan James (2-1) went the distance, striking out eight. Mike Geiger went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for Cal Lutheran (0-1, 0-1).

In the Serra tournament:

Orange Lutheran 5, South Pasadena 2--Ward Lookabaugh won his fourth game of the tournament as host Orange Lutheran (7-3) won the third-place game. Lookabaugh (4-0) threw a a 5-hitter, striking out 4. Matt Wilson and Chris Minotue each had two hits and an RBI.

In nonleague play:

Northview 9, Capistrano Valley Christian 4--First baseman Billy Gallis hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs for host Northview. Cary Langdale went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-2).

St. Margaret’s 12, Army-Navy 10--Mark Flather went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs for St. Margaret’s (2-4) at Army-Navy High School in Carlsbad. Damion Jones (1-1) pitched four innings of relief, allowing one run, to pick up the victory.
