The battle for Federated Department Stores showed signs of intensifying as the retailer and R. H. Macy & Co. said they were beginning talks on a possible sweetening of Macy’s $6.3-billion offer for Federated. Federated also said its board authorized company representatives to meet with Campeau Corp. to discuss the Toronto-based developer’s competing $6.53-billion tender offer. Finkelstein and his counterpart at Campeau, Robert Campeau, would both be allowed to address the board.
