More than 70,000 gallons of sewage spilled out of a manhole and into Loma Alta Creek in Oceanside on Friday, city officials said.
The spill began shortly after 7 a.m. when air pockets that had formed in a newly installed sewer main stopped the flow of the sewage, forcing it out of a manhole at the intersection of Garrison Street and Mesa Drive.
County health officials have posted Buchaneer Beach to warn bathers of contaminated water in the area.
