THE PREPS : Baseball : Dowding Pitches a One-Hitter

Kent Dowding threw a one-hitter as Orange Lutheran High School defeated Ontario Christian, 6-0, Friday in an Olympic League baseball game at Orange Lutheran.
Dowding (3-0) struck out just three, but he didn’t walk a batter. The only hit he surrendered was a two-out single by Jim Noonan in the fourth inning.
Orange Lutheran (9-3, 2-0) took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Chris Minogue, his fourth homer of the season. Bob Julian added a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Noonan (2-1) struck out 10 but took the loss for Valley Christian (2-6, 1-1).
In another Olympic League game:
Valley Christian 4, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Valley Christian scored three unearned runs to beat visiting Capistrano Valley Christian (4-4, 0-2).
In the Freeway League:
La Habra 16, Buena Park 7--Jeff Shaw had 2 hits and 3 RBIs to lead host La Habra (3-0, 6-2). Daren Downs went 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs. David Stevens (2-0) went five innings for victory.
Sonora 5, Sunny Hills 1--Kyle Schaetzl hit a three-run home run in the first inning for host Sonora (3-6, 1-2). John Malbandian added a two-run double in the sixth and Kevin Cook had two hits and scored two runs for Sonora. Daryn Martin (2-0) pitched a six-hitter for the victory.
Troy 4, Fullerton 2--Troy’s Tom Wilson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Steve Trachsel (4-0) threw a five-hitter, striking out 10, for Troy (4-3, 2-1). Bob Julian also homered for Troy. Carlos Martinez (1-2) allowed just four hits but took the loss. Collin Milligan’s two-run homer in the first gave Fullerton (6-3, 2-1) an early 2-0 lead.
In the Garden Grove League:
Kennedy 4, Santiago 3--Kennedy rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead, then held on for the victory at Santiago. In the sixth, Steve Rath hit a two-run homer that gave Kennedy (5-6, 1-1) a 2-1 lead. Paul Ruark later hit a two-out two-run double. Santiago scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on second and third, but Greg Hansell got the final out. Hansell (2-0) went the distance, striking out four. Carlos Leon was the loser for Santiago (3-6, 0-2). Leon had two hits.
La Quinta 8, Bolsa Grande 0--Mark Dion had two hits, including his second home run, for host La Quinta (7-4, 2-0). Mark Ralston had a two-run double for La Quinta during a four-run second inning. La Quinta scored three runs in the fifth. Jerry Arneson had two hits, scored a run and drove in another for La Quinta. James Marquez (2-3) pitched a four-hitter with three strikeouts and a walk for the victory.
Pacifica 14, Garden Grove 0--Shelby Hart had two hits and three RBIs to lead visiting Pacifica (7-3, 2-0), which has seven straight victories and has scored 114 runs in 10 games. Bill Tomkins had a double and a triple and two RBIs and Darrell Erickson had two hits and scored three runs for Pacifica. Jeff McKenzie (2-0) pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks for the victory.
In the Sunset League:
Edison 11, Fountain Valley 4--Daryl Mead had two hits and three RBIs to lead host Edison (5-3-1, 2-1). Mead doubled in the fourth to drive in two runs and give Edison an 8-4 lead. Josh Bammer had two hits, scored three runs and had three RBIs, Joe Pence had three hits and scored three runs and Bill Bertucci had three hits, scored a run and drove in one for Edison, which had 13 hits.
Marina 10, Westminster 6--Marina pitcher Sam Chirko improved to 2-1 and hit a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning as the Vikings rallied from a 4-0 deficit at Westminster.
