Steve Scott broke his own world road-racing best at the Carlsbad 5,000-meter road race. Scott, the American record holder in the mile, beat a world-class field to win with a time of 13 minutes 30.2 seconds. He set the previous mark of 13:31.9 in the same race in 1986. Marcos Barretto of Mexico City was second at 13:34.
Liz McColgan (formerly Liz Lynch) also set a world road-racing best in winning the women’s division. Her time of 15:29.7 was better than the previous mark of 15:30.2, set in 1986 by Patti Sue Plummer.
McColgan had won the Tom Sullivan St. Patrick’s Day 10K race two weeks ago. She also set the world road-racing record (30:59) for the 10K in February.
