Director Selected for Weather Service

WASHINGTON — Elbert Friday, a veteran meteorologist, was appointed director of the National Weather Service, the Commerce Department announced Monday.
Friday, who took over as director on Monday, has served as deputy director of the Weather Service since 1981, department officials said.
Friday, appointed by Commerce Secretary C. William Verity Jr., succeeds Richard Hallgren, who left the department to become executive director of the American Meteorological Society.
Friday was director of the Defense Department’s Office of Environmental and Life Sciences before retiring from the Air Force to join the Weather Service.
