JERUSALEM — Benjamin Netanyahu, who gained prominence as an articulate defender of Israel’s policies in his post as ambassador to the United Nations, announced his resignation Wednesday.
Netanyahu, 39, plans to compete for a seat in Parliament, running as a candidate of Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir’s right-wing Likud Bloc, Israel Radio said. He became Israel’s permanent representative to the United Nations in September, 1984, after serving two years as the deputy chief of mission at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
