Ben Johnson dropped out midway through the 100-meter dash after feeling a twinge in his left leg at an international track and field meet in Tokyo.
Johnson, holder of the world 100-meter record of 9.83 seconds, was competing outdoors for the first time this season. The race was won by Marty Krulee of the United States in 10.32.
“Right now, he does not feel the pain, but we must wait 24 hours to know the exact reason (for the injury),” Johnson’s coach, Charlie Francis, said.
The women’s 100 was won by Evelyn Ashford in 11.13.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Renaldo Nehemiah led from the start and won in 13.57. Milan Stewart of the United States was second in 13.68.
Larry Myricks won the long jump at 27 feet 2 1/2 inches, and Klaus Tafelmeier of West Germany won the javelin with a throw of 282 feet.
