University Leads Tennis Qualifying

University High dominated the City Section individual tennis championships Friday, placing three singles players and one doubles team in the semifinals.
Seventh-seeded Jason Clark of University upset top-seeded Anthony Cortez of Carson, 6-4, 6-4, and teammate and fifth-seeded Jon Kelly surprised seventh-seeded Mark Sundahl of El Camino Real, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Vince Mackey of University, the other top-seeded player, and Mason Harris of Palisades also won easily.
In the doubles competition, top-seeded David Caiden and Matt Narthong of North Hollywood defeated teammates Ron Kipnis and David Trapenberg, 6-2, 6-3. Eric Schwab and Will Brown became the final University players to qualify for the finals with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Greg Rosenbloom and Nader Jandaghi of Palisades.
Tom Oh and Svresh Rasaretnam of Van Nuys beat fourth-seeded Aloryn Aguirre and Roy Gessford of Palisades in the only upset of the doubles competition.
The semifinals will be held 2 p.m. Monday at the Universal Racquet Center.
