El Salvador President Jose Napoleon Duarte may be operated on early this week for his stomach and liver cancer, Salvadoran Ambassador Ernesto Rivas Gallont said in Washington. Rivas said in a telephone interview from Duarte’s room at Walter Reed Army Medical Center that the ailing president would decide today, after meeting with his doctors, whether or not to undergo surgery. Rivas said that if Duarte, 62, gives the go-ahead, the operation would take place Tuesday. Rivas said Duarte’s spirits had been lifted by a note from President Reagan, who sent his personal physician to visit the ailing Salvadoran leader Friday.
