Tehran said the Iraqi toll in an Iranian offensive near Shalamcheh in southeastern Iraq has risen to 16,500 killed or wounded. It said Revolutionary Guards regained some of the territory that Iraq captured east of Basra last month and also claimed that Iraqi warplanes dropped chemical bombs on the attackers. Iraq maintained that the Iranians were defeated, leaving behind hundreds of bodies.
