A 74-year-old man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a truck late Saturday as he tried to cross Katella Avenue, police said.
The victim’s name was not released pending family notification, Police Sgt. Scott Staton said.
The collision occurred at 9:58 p.m. Staton said the man was crossing from the north curb line of Katella, west of California Street, when he was hit by a truck driven by 22-year-old David Lee Cox of Orange.
“Cox attempted to swerve so as not to strike the victim; however, he was unable to avoid the collision,” Staton said. He said the man died en route to a nearby hospital.
Cox was not cited at the scene. The investigation will continue after traffic officers return to work Tuesday, Staton said.
