The State : Petty Officer Dies in Blaze

A Navy petty officer was killed and his friend was injured after they reentered a burning apartment, each trying to save the other, authorities said. Petty Officer Jeff Scott McCormick, 28, died when he went back into his San Diego apartment to look for his friend, Guy Boyer, who already had reached safety. Boyer suffered burns and smoke inhalation when he tried to rescue McCormick. The petty officer’s wife and two sons escaped the fire, which officials blamed on children playing with matches.
