HEGYESHALOM, Hungary — Hungarians gave an emotional, posthumous welcome home to Bela Bartok today, 48 years after the great composer fled European fascism for the United States.
Bartok died in December, 1945, in New York, where his ashes were buried in Ferncliff Cemetery. They were exhumed on June 22 for the long journey to Hungary by sea and land. Culture Minister Tibor Czibere welcomed the gray hearse at the Austrian border in a ceremony that was broadcast live on television.
