Boxing battles its way back onto network schedules in a big way this weekend.
The bouts on ABC will feature amateurs competing in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Finals in various weight divisions taking place today at Concord, Calif., can be seen as part of “Wide World of Sports” at 3 p.m. (10) and 4 p.m. (7)(3)(42).
More of the same will be found Sunday at 2 p.m. (7)(3)(10)(42).
CBS counterpunches with the pros today as Kelvin Seabrooks (25-13) steps into the ring against Orlando Canizales (18-1-1) for the IBF bantamweight championship at 3:30 p.m. (2)(8).
On Sunday, the USBA lightweight title is on the line. Ras-l-Aluja Bramble (26-2-2) will challenge Fred Pendleton (21-15-3) in a 12-rounder on “Sports Sunday” at 1:30 p.m. (2)(8). That telecast also will catch up to the Tour de France bicycle race.
Moving from France to Texas, NBC’s “SportsWorld” checks up on the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Houston at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (4)(36)(39), with Dick Enberg, Bart Conner and Mary Lou Retton reporting.
