Peace in Nicaragua

Your editorial “Peace in Peril” (July 13) reflects, it seems to me, the epitome of irrational thinking. You berate the Nicaraguan government for expelling our ambassador and other functionaries, and placing the peace process in peril. In the third paragraph of the editorial you accept as public record that La Prensa receives U.S. government support, that embassy personnel were at opposition demonstrations, that our ambassador met with opposition forces on a regular basis, and that, until recently, we continued to supply arms to the Contras.
If anyone is imperiling the peace process, it is our constant agitation as a destabilizing influence. Countries all over the world have expelled diplomats for far less reasons than the Nicaraguan government has been given.
It might be more even-handed if you focused with more diligence on the tyrannical forces still functioning in El Salvador and Guatemala.
