Peace in Nicaragua

For those of us from the Woodstock era who are a bit nostalgic for the good old exciting days of the Democratic Convention in Chicago 20 years ago, how nice it was of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega to stage a similar scene (Part I, July 12). Protesters being hit, freedom of speech curtailed! The glory days of 1968!
Mayor Richard Daley must have been turning over in his grave to see how Ortega had upstaged him. Daley didn’t think of suspending the newspapers of Chicago, or tossing the Catholic radio station off the air like Ortega did. Gosh! Those Sandinistas--when they break up a protest--they sure do it well.
I wonder if all the human rights activists like Jackson Browne, Kris Kristofferson, etc.--not to mention Amnesty International--will be as vocal on the side of the freedom of speech of Nicaraguans who oppose the Sandinistas as they have been for Ortega and his “cause.”
