Duarte : Cable TV Ordinance OKd

An ordinance adopted by the Duarte City Council last week gives the city the maximum control of cable franchise operators permitted under federal law, according to City Manager Jesse Duff.
On June 28, Kinneloa Television Systems of Pasadena acquired the cable system, which had been owned by the city. The company is paying almost $5 million for the Duarte system, Duff said.
The city has the right to terminate the 20-year franchise agreement in 15 years if service is unsatisfactory. The city will receive 5% of the cable company’s yearly gross revenue as a franchise fee, Duff said.
The ordinance approved unanimously by the council gives the city the right to inspect all construction and installations by Kinneloa. It also obligates Kinneloa, when requested, to install cable in all single-family residences and in multiple-family structures.
About 400 homes close to the foothills are completely dependent on cable service for television reception, Duff said.
