U.S. Policy in the Persian Gulf

I guess the Reagan Administration is dealing with the Iranian moderates again in regard to the compensation for victims of the downed Iranian jet.

President Reagan’s reason for compensation of “easing the hardship of the families” and his justification of “never finding compassion a bad precedent” is ill-timed (Part I, July 12).

The United States is in a war situation in the Persian Gulf. The commercial airliner was in a war zone. Innocent women and children die in wars. Let’s end this war environment and then talk about compensation to victims.

Then let us also talk about compensation to the American Embassy hostages of the Iranians for their year of agony and the current hostages of Iranian-sponsored kidnapers.

The Reagan Administration’s Middle East policies have been short-sighted and have proven disastrous from the 260 Marines who were killed like sitting ducks in Lebanon to the present fiasco.
